The UK uses the Hague Convention Apostille — issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). Most foreign authorities require a UK document to be both notarised and apostilled before they will accept it.
An Apostille is an official certificate attached to a UK public document — issued by the FCDO — that authenticates the document for use in any of the 124 Hague Convention member countries. It confirms the signature or seal on the document is genuine.
The FCDO apostilles the notary's signature — not the underlying document directly. This is why most documents must be notarised by a UK Notary Public first, then submitted to the FCDO. Legaliz handles both steps as a single seamless service.
Standard FCDO apostille: 3–5 working days. Express next-day apostille: available for urgent cases. e-Apostille (digital PDF): 24–48 hours for eligible documents. We advise the fastest route for your document type.
We handle apostille for all major UK document types — personal, academic, legal and corporate.
The FCDO now issues electronic Apostilles (e-Apostilles) — a digitally-signed PDF with a QR code, verifiable online by any authority in the world. No paper. No courier. No waiting.
An e-Apostille is a digital version of the Hague Convention Apostille certificate, issued by the FCDO as a cryptographically-signed PDF. It carries a QR code that allows any receiving authority to verify its authenticity online via the HCCH Apostille Section register — instantly, from anywhere in the world.
Faster — digital delivery to your inbox in 24–48 hours rather than waiting for courier. Cheaper — no physical postage or handling costs. Preferred by Chinese employers, US institutions and EU authorities. Cannot be lost, damaged or delayed in the post. Instantly shareable with overseas lawyers, employers or authorities.
All 124 Hague Convention member countries are obligated to accept e-Apostilles. In practice, they are most widely used for China (enthusiastic early adopter since 2023), USA, Spain, Germany, Netherlands and other EU states. Some non-digital jurisdictions still prefer paper — we advise which applies to your destination.
Two steps. No travel. Document delivered to your inbox as a verifiable PDF.
A Power of Attorney (POA) is a legal document authorising someone to act on your behalf. Different POA types serve very different purposes — we draft and notarise the correct type for your situation.
The most common type we prepare. Authorises a trusted person in Poland, Romania, Lithuania, Latvia or elsewhere to sell, buy or mortgage property on your behalf — without you travelling back.
Authorises a representative to operate bank accounts, access funds, close accounts or manage investments in a foreign country on your behalf. Often required by Romanian and Polish banks.
Grants broad authority for legal proceedings, court representation, inheritance claims, estate administration and dealings with notaries or government offices in your home country.
Authorises a company director, agent or representative to sign contracts, attend proceedings and act on behalf of a UK company in overseas transactions — UAE, USA, Saudi Arabia and EU markets.
UK domestic LPA — authorises a trusted person to manage your property & financial affairs or health & welfare decisions if you lose mental capacity. Registered with the Office of the Public Guardian.
Authorises a lawyer or trusted person to represent you in divorce proceedings, court hearings or administrative processes in Romania, Poland or other countries where you cannot attend in person.
We draft the POA in the correct language and legal format for your destination country, then notarise it — and apostille it if required.
Yes — this is exactly what our service is designed for. You sign the POA here in the UK in front of a UK Notary. Once apostilled, your attorney (the person you've authorised) can use it in Romania, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia or wherever it's needed, without you being present.
We draft the POA bilingually — in both English and the required language — as standard. This is the correct format for most Eastern European notaries and authorities. A certified translation of an English-only document may not be accepted, which is why we draft in both languages from the outset.
This varies by destination country. In Romania, a POA is typically valid for 3 years unless the document specifies otherwise. In Poland, it is often time-unlimited unless revoked. We advise on the appropriate validity period when drafting. Apostilles on the POA do not expire, but the underlying POA may have limits.
A foreign POA authorises someone to act on your behalf in a specific overseas transaction (property sale, banking, court). A UK Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a domestic document registered with the Office of the Public Guardian, activating if you lose mental capacity. They serve very different purposes — we can advise which you need.

Hague Convention member — no embassy visit needed. The fastest international route we offer.
Not a Hague member — Apostille alone will be rejected. The Royal Thai Embassy stamp is mandatory.
Most complex legalisation chain of any jurisdiction. Embassy fees can exceed £500 for commercial documents.
US Embassy notary in London: 6–8 week wait. Ours: 48 hours. US authorities explicitly accept UK Notary + FCDO Apostille.
China joined the Hague Convention in November 2023. The Embassy paper chain is gone. Digital PDF e-apostilles delivered in 24–48 hours.
Qatar enforces the most rigorous document legalisation regime we handle. Bundled documents are rejected outright — every page must complete its own full chain.
Hague member since 2012. Most documents use apostille only — but professional qualifications additionally require the Saudi Cultural Bureau.
Notary fees at Legaliz start from £95 for standard documents (Power of Attorney, travel consent). Certified copies from £50. FCDO Apostille from £120. Embassy attestation services from £295. Fixed, transparent pricing — no hidden fees.
"Legalisation" is the general term for making a UK document valid abroad. For Hague Convention countries (Spain, USA, China etc.), legalisation is done via an FCDO Apostille — a standardised certificate. For non-Hague countries (UAE, Thailand, Qatar), additional Embassy Attestation steps are required on top of the Apostille.
Yes — provided it is drafted bilingually in the correct legal format for the destination country, notarised by a UK Notary Public, and apostilled by the FCDO. We prepare POAs specifically formatted for Romanian and Polish notaries as a standard part of our service.
Urgent 24–48 hour appointments across 60+ UK cities. Same-day appointments available from our Northampton HQ — call to check availability.
Yes — this is our core market. We have native-language support for all four communities and prepare Pełnomocnictwa, Procuri notariale, Įgaliojimai and Pilnvaras regularly for use in Poland, Romania, Lithuania and Latvia.
An Apostille is accepted by all 124 Hague Convention member countries. Embassy Attestation is an additional step required by non-Hague countries (Thailand, UAE, Qatar) where the destination country's embassy in London adds their own stamp after the Apostille.
No. Since China joined the Hague Convention in November 2023, the Chinese Embassy no longer needs to stamp documents. An FCDO Apostille (or e-Apostille) issued after UK notarisation is now fully accepted.
Yes. The USA is a Hague Convention member and explicitly accepts documents notarised by a UK Notary Public and apostilled by the FCDO as the legal equivalent of US Consular notarisation — across all 50 states.
Qatar requires each page of a multi-page document to independently complete the full notary → FCDO → Embassy attestation chain. Documents stapled together are rejected outright. We apply meticulous page-by-page processing for all Qatar instructions.
Yes — particularly for UAE and Qatar, where HR departments often need 5–30 documents processed simultaneously. We offer corporate volume pricing and dedicated account management. Email admin@legaliz.co.uk with your volume requirements.
Tell us your destination and document type. We'll confirm the exact route, cost and turnaround — and handle every step.
